Consent & messaging setup

This is the administrator's side of consent and patient messaging — which channels you enable and how consent is captured on them. For how consent works in practice — how the assistant decides what it can share and how staff manage a patient's consent — see Consent & patient privacy.

The principle you're configuring around

Before the assistant shares any personal health information over phone or text, two separate things must be true: the patient's identity is verified, and consent is on file for that channel. A patient can prove who they are and still not have consented — in which case the assistant shares nothing private and invites them to opt in instead. Everything below serves that rule.

Channels you enable

Each messaging channel is turned on per clinic:

  • Portal messaging — two-way messages inside the patient portal.
  • Text (SMS) — texting with patients and prospects.
  • Phone — the voice assistant on your clinic line.

Consent to receive health information is tracked per channel, with a full audit history. It can be captured three ways:

  • From the patient portal — a patient turns consent on or off themselves.
  • By text (double opt-in) — a patient replies to confirm they want health information by text.
  • By staff — a team member grants or revokes consent from the patient's record.

A patient can reply STOP to a text at any time, which both stops further texts and withdraws text consent. The full behavior is covered in Consent & patient privacy.

AI-assisted replies

How much the messaging AI does is set per clinic — from off, to drafting replies for a staff review queue, to sending only low-risk replies automatically. Sensitive messages are always escalated to a person, and every AI action is recorded. See Patient messaging & SMS.

Compliance posture

Access to protected health information is logged, and emergency ("break-glass") access is time-limited and recorded. These safeguards are on by default.

Controlled rollout of patient SMS

Because text messaging with real patients depends on identity verification, consent, and the required carrier agreements being in place, SMS is rolled out in a controlled way. Ask your Fertiligent contact about enabling it for your clinic.
